Differences between scientific and journalistic discourse in the communication of Science


In this course students will explore the differences between journalistic and scientific articles as well as the characteristics that make up a good story for science. In addition, they will examine traditional and digital tools that can be used to find science topics that could be communicated through a journalistic article.

  • Describing differences in scientific and journalistic discourse when communicating science
  • Assessing what make a scientific topic interesting to the general public
  • Examining digital and traditional sources of ideas for scientific topics
Expected outcomes:

By the end of this course, students will:

  • be informed about the differences between the journalistic and scientific article
  • recognize the characteristics of a good story for science
  • know tools that help identify potential ideas for stories about science that the general public would be interested in
  • brainstorm and select ideas for potentially interesting science topics
